Thunder's Chet Holmgren will miss 8-10 weeks after undergoing treatment on patellar tendon tear
Holmgren underwent a successful 'biological treatment' on his right knee but will miss time while recovering, the team announced Friday.
The Oklahoma City Thunder's injury issues continue as star center Chet Holmgren is set to miss significant time. The team announced Friday that Holmgren will be out eight to 10 weeks after undergoing treatment for a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee.
Per the team, Holmgren was assessed after experiencing "mild discomfort" in his knee last week. After consulting with specialists, Holmgren underwent "a biological treatment" in that knee, which the team said was "successful."
Holmgren did not play in the Thunder's past two matchups after being ruled out with right knee patellar tendinitis. Based on Oklahoma City's timeline, Holmgren will likely not return to the court until December or January.
In the same announcement, the Thunder said Cason Wallace successfully underwent surgery on a labral tear in his left shoulder and will be re-evaluated before the end of the season. Wallace sustained the tear earlier this week, just a week after the guard signed a five-year, $139 million extension .
Oklahoma City has suffered injury blow after injury blow early in the season, with several key players sidelined in the past week . Starting guard Jalen Williams went down on Sunday with a gruesome leg injury ; he underwent surgery this week to repair his fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, and will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season. To make things worse, key bench player Alex Caruso sprained his ankle Monday and is likely to be out for several games.
Holmgren, Wallace and Williams all sustained their injuries on the same day, with Caruso's ankle injury coming a day later.
"We're not doing great," head coach Mark Daigneault said after Williams was carted off in Sunday's win. "That's tough on the guys."
The flurry of injuries will significantly test the Thunder's depth. Though Oklahoma City has Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to hold things down, it'll also be missing three starters and a top bench player. Jared McCain (who was traded to the Thunder last February), Ajay Mitchell and Kenrich Williams have been filling in as starters, with Mitchell dropping 29 points in Wednesday's loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
