Rays' Nick Martinez Says Team is 'Capable' of Historic World Series Comeback After Walk-Off G4 Win
After keeping their season alive with a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 12 innings in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night, the Tampa Bay Rays got the glimmer of hope they need to believe a historic comeback is possible.
After keeping their season alive with a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 12 innings in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night, the Tampa Bay Rays got the glimmer of hope they need to believe a historic comeback is possible.
Rays pitcher Nick Martinez told reporters after the win they are "capable" of becoming the first team in World Series history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit.
"Sometimes you just got to see one through," said Martinez, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief. "We can win four in a row. This team is capable of doing that."
The Brewers, who have been the comeback kids throughout this postseason, got to experience it from the other side when Tampa scored twice in the bottom of the 12th to get the win after Cooper Pratt put the NL champs up 3-2 in the top of the frame.
Milwaukee's loss snapped its eight-game playoff winning streak that was tied for the longest by any team in MLB history.
The most famous eight-game postseason win streak was the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who are still the only team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series in MLB history. They won four straight against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
Tampa only has to win four straight games to capture its first championship. It would be a Herculean task if the Rays pull it off, but the first hurdle has been cleared.
The Brewers did have two losing streaks of at least four games in the regular season, though both of them came back in April.
Milwaukee will send Jacob Misiorowski to the mound in Game 5 on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET looking to clinch its first World Series title in franchise history.
The Rays have not yet announced their starting pitcher. Martinez, who started Game 1, would have been in line to take the mound if he had not been used on Tuesday.
