Yankees legend Jorge Posada says he doesn't 'feel welcome' around the team anymore
Jorge Posada spent all 17 of his MLB seasons with the Yankees.
Throughout the New York Yankees' late-'90s dynasty, few players epitomized the team better than Jorge Posada. His rise to prominence coincided with the Yankees' three-peat during the decade. From there, he remained a mainstay in the lineup over his 17-year MLB career.
Now, he no longer feels welcome around the team. Posada revealed that information during an appearance on the New York Post's baseball podcast.
When asked whether he would be a good candidate to help the team's coaching staff, Posada said, "I could, but I don't think they want me there to tell you the truth."
When asked why he believed that was the case, Posada followed up:
"I don't feel welcome when I go there. Even in spring training, I don't feel like … I don't feel welcome. I don't feel like they want me there, so I don't go."
Posada said he wasn't sure what caused his relationship with the team to change and expressed a desire to move forward. He added, however, that the final year of his career was difficult, and it's tough to relive those feelings when he returns to the team.
After 14 fantastic years as a mainstay with the team, Posada saw his numbers dip in his final year with the Yankees. Relegated to the team's designated hitter role, Posada hit just .235/.315/.398 in his final year. He was 40.
A few months later, he retired. Despite the Yankees not showing interest in bringing him back for another year, Posada retired as a member of the franchise and spoke highly of the Yankees during his retirement announcement.
While the Yankees have turned in some strong seasons since Posada's retirement, making the playoffs in 10 of 14 tries, the team hasn't won a World Series during that stretch. Despite a sense that things have stalled out under manager Aaron Boone, the team announced in October that he would be back as its manager for another season.
With Boone back, there's a belief the Yankees could benefit from some new blood elsewhere in the organization. Posada could provide that, and his word could carry some weight in the clubhouse considering his history with the organization.
For now, that type of role doesn't appear in the cards for Posada, at least not until he feels more welcome around his former team.
