A tapir at Curraghs Wildlife Park has died after a short illness.

The 'much-loved' animal, called Zeus, was born on the Isle of Man 11 years ago and was the only male tapir at the park.

Park manager Kathleen Graham said the animal, which died of colic, was popular among visitors and will be missed.

"Losing an animal is always difficult, both for the people who care for them and for those who have come to know them during visits," she said.

"Visitors may notice that the paddock beside the jumping pillow, where Zeus lived, is now empty. This space will remain so for the time being," she said.

Following Zeus's death, Kathleen believes the park may make a donation towards a tapir conservation project.

"When red panda Kush passed away, we gave a substantial donation to the Red Panda Network. So I would imagine that when our conservation team meets we will probably discuss doing a donation in his honour," Kathleen said.

She added: "It is always hard to say goodbye to a favourite animal but we are aware there are a number of very wise animals here that still need our care and attention.
