President Trump is hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan at the White House for a formal state dinner Thursday night.
The Office of the First Lady announced the menu ahead of the gathering at the White House, which will bookend a day filled with meetings between Trump and Xi. First lady Melania Trump headed up “the preparations for the dinner,” the office stated.
The Trumps greeted Xi and Peng when they arrived Wednesday evening at Joint Base Andrews. This state visit marks the Chinese president’s first trip to Washington, D.C., in more than a decade.
“The menu showcases American ingredients with subtle Chinese influence, bringing the culinary traditions of both nations together,” the first lady’s office said in its announcement.
Included in the first course is a yellow squash velouté, featuring wild mushrooms, fresh herbs, crispy pancetta and drizzled scallion oil.
Guests will then be served a sesame-crusted sea bass for their second course, alongside braised baby bok choy, roasted garden eggplant and a sauce verte.
For dessert, state dinner attendees will dine on vanilla crémeux with sour cherry confit, both topping a walnut frangipane. An ice cream made with honey gathered at the White House will accompany the dish; the first lady unveiled a new beehive on the property’s grounds in April.
The first lady’s office selected Schramsberg Blanc De Noir as the dinner’s wine accompaniment, which it says is a reference to the 1972 “Toast to Peace” between former President Nixon and former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in Beijing.
