The rapper Tinie Tempah has confirmed he will visit Scunthorpe, after an online campaign was started by a local fan to get him to the town.

His 2010 number one hit Pass Out included the lyrics "I been Southampton but I've never been to Scunthorpe".

In a video on social media, he said: "I can't wait to come down to Scunny, and meet the wonderful people. It's been long overdue, see you soon guys."

Ben Johns, who started the campaign, added: "To see everybody get involved with it from Scunthorpe United to John Leggott College, loads of different people around the town, as well as people on the internet who aren't even from Scunthorpe but want to see it happen. It's just been amazing to see."

In the social media video, the rapper thanked Johns for all of his "hard work" towards the campaign, which involved securing 5,000 pre-saves for his new album in return for a visit to the town.

He said he was "so thankful and grateful to all the people of Scunthorpe" and he "can't wait to party" with them.

Tempah spoke to BBC Newsnight in August about the pressures grassroots music venues face and his new album, which was inspired by UK nightlife.

He said he thought "this is the time" to visit the town.

Johns, who is from Scunthorpe, told BBC Radio Humberside : "I think it's really going to be a special night when Tinie Tempah turns out and he performs in the town and he gets people excited."

In a statement, Tempah's management said: "We are looking forward to planning something special for the incredible fans based in Scunthorpe."
