Formula 1 fans have been waiting more than three decades for the sport to return to Africa, and that wait is finally coming to an end. F1 officially announced Tuesday that Rwanda will host the African Grand Prix under a new 10 year agreement, marking a historic moment for the sport. The race is expected to join the calendar in the early 2030s.

The new Grand Prix will take place at a purpose-built circuit planned for Bugesera, approximately 25 miles south of Rwanda's capital, Kigali.

The track will be designed to meet FIA Grade 1 standards, the level required to host Formula 1 races. Former F1 driver Alex Wurz and renowned circuit designer Hermann Tilke are involved in developing the plans, with the layout expected to take advantage of the area's natural elevation changes.

The venue will be part of a larger development project intended to boost tourism, attract international investment and create new opportunities for businesses and local communities.

However, construction still needs to be completed before the race can take place. F1 has not yet announced an exact date for the inaugural event.

A Return More Than 30 Years in the Making

The announcement ends a long absence for Formula 1 in Africa. The championship last raced on the continent in 1993, when the South African Grand Prix was held at the historic Kyalami circuit.

Since then, there have been repeated efforts to bring F1 back, with South Africa also exploring a potential return. Rwanda's agreement now gives the sport a confirmed long-term plan for racing on the continent again.

The move is particularly significant for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has repeatedly spoken about his desire to see Formula 1 return to Africa.

The African Grand Prix could open the door to a new generation of fans and help expand the sport's global reach.

Rwanda's deal represents more than another destination on the calendar. It gives Formula 1 an opportunity to connect with a growing audience while bringing international attention and investment to the region.

There are still major steps ahead before the first race becomes reality, but the agreement is official.

After years of speculation, Formula 1 is finally heading back to Africa, and the sport's next chapter could begin in Rwanda in the early 2030s.
