BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh's Jan Dhan numbers tell two sharply different stories - while the state has 4.76 crore accounts, the average balance in each is just Rs 4,182, among the lowest in the country.More than one-third of these accounts are either inoperative or have zero balance, with 1.36 crore classified as inoperative and another 46.72 lakh carrying no money, according to Union govt data. The information was provided by Union ministry of finance in reply to an RTI query filed by Neemuch-based RTI activist Chandrashekhar Gaur. The data, as of Aug 12, 2026, puts Mnd among 36 states and UTs in average balance, against the national average of Rs 5,338.64.MP, however, ranks fourth nationally in the number of PMJDY accounts, behind Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Its Rs 19,919.10 crore deposit corpus is the sixth-highest among states and UTs, indicating the scale of financial inclusion achieved in terms of account opening. But the low average balance presents a different picture. At Rs 4,182.43 per account, MP is around Rs 1,156 below the national average. Only Andhra (Rs 4,103.44), Nagaland (Rs 3,785.29), Assam (Rs 2,873.86) and Manipur (Rs 2,853.19) have lower average balances.
