Ukraine says it has attacked a Russian rubber factory in the Samara region on the Volga river.

A fire was detected on the premises of the plant in Togliatti, the General Staff in Kiev reported on Saturday.

The company specializes in the production of synthetic rubbers, which are important for the use of tactical and ballistic missiles, according to the statement.

Early on Saturday, Russian regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported a major Ukrainian drone attack on Telegram, without providing details about the target.

The mayor of Togliatti, Ilya Sukhih, said that one person had been taken to hospital following a massive attack on the city. Several multi-storey residential buildings have been damaged, he said.

Unverified images and videos purporting to show a large cloud of smoke in Togliatti were circulating on social media. The city is located around 750 kilometres from Russia's border with Ukraine.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion for more than four and a half years with Western assistance.

As part of its defensive campaign, it repeatedly targets locations deep within Russian territory.
