Hull Maritime Museum welcomes 50,000 visitors in first month

Hull Maritime Museum has said the newly restored attraction had 50,000 visitors in its first month.

The museum reopened following a £20m renovation on 8 August.

The museum said there was strong public interest and visitors had travelled from across the region and beyond to see the exhibitions, which celebrate Hull's seafaring past.

Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, said the turnout was a "fantastic achievement".

Hull Maritime Museum is a Grade II*-listed landmark dating back to 1871.

The building is the former Dock Offices on Queen Victoria Square, and ships once sailed directly past its doors. It first opened as a museum in 1975.

Following the revamp, the museum said 50% more objects had gone on display, including some from one of Hull's whaling vessels.

The museum said it had already achieved a quarter of its annual target for visitor numbers.

"To welcome more than 50,000 visitors in the museum's first month is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates just how important Hull Maritime Museum is to our city and its communities," Ross said.
