Trichy: Stressing the need for a comprehensive State Road Safety Action Plan with actionable district-level plans to reduce road deaths, Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG), Chennai, hosted a stakeholder workshop with Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation in Trichy on Sunday. The workshop discussed the need for Tamil Nadu to update its Road Safety Policy, which the state pioneered in 2007, ahead of the National Road Safety Policy, 2010.“No matter what road safety action plan or policy we bring, roads will become safer only if we obey the rules. Even on my way here, I watched a person violate a red signal, and many followed him. The change for safer roads should come from us, including elected representatives. I will apprise the need for revising the state’s road safety policy with the CM,” Durai Vaiko said. The MP said infrastructure improvements being carried out through his efforts at G Corner, Sanjeevi Nagar and Kollidam Y road junctions in the city would make roads safer.Tamil Nadu recorded 67,526 road crashes in 2024, the highest in the country. Trichy district recorded 720 road crash casualties in 2023, while fatalities stood at 816 in 2024 and 529 in 2025.Researchers from CAG, Chennai, said a structured State Road Safety Action Plan was critical to achieving the national goal of reducing road crash deaths by 50% by 2030.“Speed guidelines must be urgently implemented as speeding is the primary cause of crashes and fatalities on the roads,” Nina Subramani, Senior Researcher, CAG, said. She added that an action plan would provide a roadmap for evidence-based interventions, stronger institutional coordination and measurable targets. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Trichy | Silver Rate in Trichy | Bank Holidays in Trichy | Public Holidays in TrichyStay updated with the latest Trichy news.
