Cusat researchers secure patent for antenna technology to reduce radiation exposure
Cusat researchers secured an Indian patent for compact microstrip patch antenna technology to reduce radiation exposure and SAR in wireless and body-centric devices.
Kochi: Researchers at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) have received an Indian patent for a compact microstrip patch antenna technology designed to reduce radiation directed towards the human body from wireless devices. The technology is aimed at reducing the absorption of electromagnetic energy by the human body while maintaining a compact antenna design. It can also improve antenna performance and reduce the specific absorption rate, a measure of the rate at which the body absorbs radiofrequency energy.Stephen Rodrigues, retired professor, Department of Instrumentation, Cusat, and Hrudya B Kurup, research scholar in the department, conducted the research.“The technology uses a simple antenna design to control the direction of radiation. It reduces radiation from the rear of the antenna while maintaining the required signal in the forward direction. Tests showed that the technology can lower the amount of electromagnetic energy absorbed by the human body,” said Kurup. The technology could have potential applications in compact wireless communication devices and body-centric antenna systems, where controlling the direction of electromagnetic radiation is important, she said.“Presently, it remains a technology and requires further efforts for real-world implementation,” said Kurup. The patent was facilitated by the IPR facilitation cell of Inter University Centre for IPR Studies (IUCIPRS), Cusat. You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Kochi | Silver Rate in Kochi | Bank Holidays in Kochi | Public Holidays in KochiStay updated with the latest Kochi news.
