Selma Blair has spoken out publicly for the first time since her arrest on assault charges after an incident on a plane earlier this month, apologizing to “the people that I disappointed.” The 54-year-old “Cruel Intentions” star shared a video on Instagram on Friday, saying that though her attorneys advised her against speaking about the case, she’s taking the legal matter “very seriously.” “To the people that I disappointed, that I hurt, that I frightened, alarmed, I am so sorry,” Blair said. In the opening of her video, Blair said, “I know I’ve been quiet for a couple weeks since October 11th, and you deserve to hear from me directly. And I’m sorry that it’s taken this long.” Blair was on a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to New York City when she allegedly became “physically abusive” and was removed from the plane, authorities in New York said at the time. Two flight attendants reported injuries, and one was taken to a hospital, Port Authority said. The actor was charged with two counts of second-degree assault related to her alleged actions after the flight. She is accused of kicking a Port Authority police officer who took her to the hospital and a nurse at the hospital later. She pleaded not guilty to those charges. In her video, Blair defended her character, saying it’s not her nature to harm others. “What I can tell you, though, is very simple, and the truest thing I know about myself, and that not one day ever have I intended to hurt or frighten anyone a day in my life,” Blair said. She thanked those who reached out with love and support. “It has meant everything to me and my son, who is my world, as is Scout, who is also OK,” she said, referring to her service dog. “So right now, I’m going to be taking care of my health and my son, and thinking of you all with gratitude and love,” she said, concluding her video. Blair revealed in 2018 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disorder that attacks healthy cells in the central nervous system, according to the National Institutes of Health. Blair’s attorney stated in court that her actions were the result of a medical emergency, citing diagnoses of multiple sclerosis and Parkinsonism. At her Oct. 12 arraignment, her attorney, Shawn Barnes, told the judge that he doesn’t believe the assault was intentional and that the star had missed several doses of medication and also fell and hit her head on the flight. Blair’s representative separately said in a statement that Blair had “experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct.” The case was adjourned until Jan. 19, the DA’s office said.
