A retired wind-turbine blade became the main structural element of a pedestrian and cycling bridge over Poland's Szprotawa River in 2021. The firm says the project followed three years of research and development carried out with the Rzeszów University of Technology.Wind-turbine blades are difficult to recycle in the same way as metals, as they are generally made from composite materials, including fiberglass and resin, that are engineered to remain strong and lightweight during years of operation. Separating those materials for conventional recycling can be difficult once a blade reaches the end of its service life.That has encouraged engineers and researchers to look at ways of keeping the blades intact and finding new structural uses for them, and the Szprotawa project took exactly that approach. The engineers retained its structural properties and incorporated it into a bridge rather than breaking the blade down into smaller materials. The blade formed the central structural element, while a seating area was incorporated into the middle of the bridge.A local transport problem shaped the projectSzprotawa's municipal government said that the crossing was intended to improve pedestrian and bicycle movement between the eastern and northern parts of the town, and connect streets and recreational areas on opposite sides of the river. A pedestrian and cycling route was built alongside the river, and the municipality added lighting powered by photovoltaic panels. The completed route linked the river crossing with nearby recreational infrastructure and a canoe landing.The municipality put the total value of the project at 245,000 Polish złoty, with 80,000 złoty coming from a regional tourism infrastructure program. The crossing was initially scheduled to open at the beginning of January 2022, although the bridge itself had been constructed in 2021.The blade became part of the bridge's identityThe project was subsequently presented as an example of repurposing composite turbine components rather than treating them only as waste. A Polish construction competition listing for the project describes the Szprotawa bridge as the first bridge of its type and says its main structural components were retired wind-turbine blades.The engineering question was whether a blade that is designed to withstand years of aerodynamic loading could be adapted to carry loads in a bridge. According to the competition record, testing was carried out to establish the strength and stiffness of the composite blade as a bridge girder.That changed the role of the old turbine component, as it was no longer part of a machine designed to generate electricity, but a structural member in a public crossing.
