Jersey Zoo's beloved orangutan Nettie dies aged 43

Nettie, a much-loved Sumatran orangutan and a familiar face at Jersey Zoo for 15 years, has died.

The 43-year-old orangutan was euthanised on Monday following veterinary advice after staff saw signs that age-related health problems were increasingly affecting her wellbeing, the zoo said.

Nettie had been receiving specialist geriatric care for several years, including medication and supplements to help manage suspected osteoarthritis and long-standing dental issues.

Dr Nic Masters, head of veterinary services at zoo owner Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: "We made a responsible, proactive decision to end her life in a peaceful and considered way before she was in distress."

Born at Tierpark Berlin in Germany in 1983, Nettie arrived at Jersey Zoo in 2011 after living at Duisburg Zoo. She later gave birth to Jantho in 2013 with her partner, Dagu.

Mark Habben, director of zoo operations, said: "Nettie was such a special character and a constant friendly face to so many of us."

Popular with visitors and staff alike, Nettie was known for her curious nature and often spent time watching people from her enclosure. As a critically endangered species, Sumatran orangutans remain under threat in the wild.
