Wright: US ‘may not’ reach nuclear agreement with Iran

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday the Trump administration “may not” reach a nuclear agreement with the Iranian regime.

“There may not be a nuclear agreement. It may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it,” Wright told host Martha Raddatz on ABC’s “This Week.”

The Energy secretary added a nuclear agreement with the Islamic Republic “may await a next administration.”

The Middle Eastern conflict has entered its seventh month , with no sign of a deal between the U.S. and Iran to end military hostilities and curb the latter’s nuclear program. The U.S. and Israel launched the war in late February, with President Trump and administration officials saying the goal was to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

American forces on Saturday fired on multiple Iranian crude oil carriers in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacking two U.S. warships, U.S. Central Command said .

IRGC forces retaliated on Sunday by striking an American ship in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state media reported.

Trump on Friday called the conflict “small potatoes” for the U.S. and said he “can understand” Vice President Vance saying he does not view the conflict in Iran as a war.

“I call it a military conflict because it’s small potatoes for us. It’s not a big thing,” Trump said of the war, which has resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. service members and thousands of Iranian civilians.

Wright said Sunday the U.S. has to “destroy” Iran’s nuclear capabilities, saying American forces are “degrading their capacity to develop nuclear weapons and, ultimately, to deliver them if they develop one.”

He told Raddatz, “This is not trivial, but the United States will get the job done. And we will work in cooperation with our allies in the region.”
