Authorities in Jersey have got new equipment to detect, assess and respond to future drone reports.

Flights were affected on Friday and Saturday evening at the island's airport, causing major disruption. Police said an investigation was under way.

There is increasing use of the small unmanned aircraft for filming, photography and light displays, but strict rules are employed to keep airspace and maritime space safe and functional.

Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Helen Miles said: "Protecting public safety and maintaining Jersey's connectivity remain our priorities. We will continue to work with police, Ports of Jersey and partners to ensure the island is as well prepared as possible."

Drones are not allowed to be flown within two nautical miles (2.3miles/3.7km) of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney airports unless the Office of the Director of Civil Aviation and local air traffic control have granted permission.

Jersey Police have also confirmed that an RAF plane which landed in the island on Sunday evening was due to the threat of drones affecting the airport.

Police said they were still trying to find out who was responsible and asked anyone with any information about any incidents, no matter how significant, to get in contact.

Islanders, airlines and travellers have been reassured that Jersey is alert, its response has been strengthened, and agencies were prepared to respond to any further reports, emergency sevices said.
