Trump: Xi ‘seemed to like’ calling AI ‘super intelligence’

President Trump said on Friday that Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to like referring to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” days after Trump announced the U.S. would be using the new name in official documents and communications.

Trump made the observation in a Truth Social post in which he referred to his meeting with the Chinese leader as “very productive.”

“Tremendous things will be happening. Like almost everyone else, he seemed to like calling the poorly and inaccurately named Artificial Intelligence to a far more accurate and important name, SUPER INTELLIGENCE. That would be ‘SUPER!’ Everyone last night agreed, also,” Trump wrote.

Xi addressed the issue of artificial intelligence publicly at the White House on Thursday he but notably did not refer to it as superintelligence.

“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good, and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the well-being of the people,” Xi said.

Superintelligence is already defined as a form of artificial intelligence that exceeds human intelligence. It is both the ultimate goal of many frontier AI firms and the greatest worry among those warning about its threat to humanity.

Trump announced at the United Nations General Assembly earlier this week that the term would be used instead of artificial intelligence in U.S. documents.

The State Department has since directed its diplomats to use it in their communications going forward.
