Trump confirms he will meet with Xi two more times this year

President Trump on Friday confirmed he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping two more times before the end of the year, following his counterpart’s three-day state visit to the U.S.

Trump said in a TruthSocial post that he will meet with Xi in China this November for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, as well as in December during the G20 Summit in Miami.

“President Xi and Madam Peng have just left D.C., heading for China. The meeting was one of Friendship, Strength, and Success, for both China and the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote. “Much has been, and will be, accomplished. I look forward to our next meeting!”

Earlier on Friday, during a tea with Trump and first lady Melania Trump, Xi said he and Trump will have two more opportunities to meet this year in China and the U.S.

“We will,” Trump said, responding to Xi’s initial invitation.

Xi wrapped his second state visit to the U.S. on Friday. He last visited the country during the Obama administration in 2015.

Trump literally rolled out the red carpet for Xi despite facing criticism on both sides of the aisle over the historically adversarial relationship between Washington and Beijing.

Republican and Democratic senators cited allegations that China has aided Iran in its war against the U.S., as well as Beijing’s poor human rights record.

Trump himself criticized then-President Obama for his lavish welcome of Xi at the time.

Trump told reporters on Friday that he and Xi discussed the Iran war. U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue also said on Friday that Trump made it clear to Xi that China helping Iran is unacceptable.

The two leaders also discussed artificial intelligence during their meetings. The U.S. president also suggested there could be an agriculture deal in the works.

“I think our farmers are going to be very happy, a lot of very positive things happened,” Trump said on Friday.
