Bone-like remains found in Ahmedabad civic water tank after 10 days of foul-smelling water complaints

AHMEDABAD: Human skeletal remains were allegedly found on Wednesday during the cleaning of an underground water tank at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run Asarwa Village Pumping Station.Police and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams have seized the bone-like remains and launched an investigation.The water supply from the pumping station has remained suspended for two days. Locals had reportedly complained of foul-smelling water for around 10 days before the remains were discovered during the tank's routine cleaning.The FSL will determine whether the remains are human or animal. No formal police complaint has been registered so far.Sanjay Patel, president of Asarwa Youth Circle and a local resident, said residents had been receiving foul-smelling water for the past 10 days. He said the alleged skeleton was removed from the tank and taken by FSL officials on Wednesday.Patel also called for increased security at the pumping station, saying the incident raised concerns about access to drinking water tanks.Yashwant Prabhakar, additional engineer with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, said routine cleaning of the underground tank at the Asarwa Village Water Distribution Station was scheduled on September 23.The work was being carried out by Central Zone contractor Krunal Builders.During the cleaning, a sanitation worker reported finding bone-like objects inside the tank. The agency operating and maintaining the station immediately informed police through the Water Operation Department.A police team reached the spot, recovered the objects and initiated legal procedures. Police also informed the FSL, whose team arrived around 8pm and took custody of the remains for examination.Prabhakar said the remaining water was subsequently drained from the tank using a mud pump.
