India accounts for 20% of world’s childhood cancers: Jipmer

PUDUCHERRY: India accounts for 20% of childhood cancers worldwide. Leukaemia, lymphoma and central nervous system (CNS) tumours are the most common cancers, a release from the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has said.The institute has maintained a paediatric cancer registry since 2010. It currently registers approximately 200 to 220 new cases annually. Resident doctors, nurses and medical social workers play a key role in reducing treatment abandonment through counselling, financial/ logistic support, and follow-up action, said the release.The department of medical oncology, Jipmer, observed the “National childhood cancer awareness month – 2026” under the theme “Tiny Hands, Mighty Hearts – Childhood Cancer is Curable,” on Sept 27 intending to create awareness about childhood cancer. The observation aimed at laying importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, and spreading the message that childhood cancer is curable.The programme was aligned with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) global initiative for childhood cancer, which targets a 60% survival rate by 2030.
