President Trump said Wednesday he asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai to rename the Atlantic Ocean on the company’s Google Maps application, a request the tech executive denied.

“We seriously looked at the Atlantic Ocean,” Trump said during a rally in Clemson, S.C.

The president then praised Google Maps for changing the respective names of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario to “Gulf of America” and “Lake America,” after he signed executive orders to rename the bodies of water.

The updated names are on display for users of the app in the U.S. Users in Canada still see “Lake Ontario,” while those outside the two countries see both names.

Trump added he spoke to Pichai, whom he called a “brilliant guy,” about renaming the Atlantic Ocean.

“I said, ‘Sundar, I’m thinking of the Atlantic Ocean, can you handle it?’” the president said of their conversation.

But Pichai pushed back on Trump’s request, saying, “No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it,” the president recalled, chuckling.

Pichai added, “They cover … a lot of countries, please don’t ask us to do that,” according to Trump.

The president then noted he will “probably pass” on attempting to rename the Atlantic Ocean, the second-largest of the world’s five oceans.

Trump did not say what he intended to rename the Atlantic Ocean. The Hill has reached out to the White House and Google for comment.

The president signed an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on his first day back in office.

In August, Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario , one of the five Great Lakes, to Lake America amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The president on Monday urged New Mexico to change its name to “New America,” which garnered pushback from Democratic leaders in the state.

“We are New Mexicans,” Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) wrote Monday on social platform X.

“We’re proud of our name, proud of our home, and we’re keeping both,” he added. “Long after Donald Trump is out of office, we’ll still be New Mexico.”
