Xi says China, US have ‘responsibility’ to keep AI under human control

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Thursday the U.S. and China have an obligation to manage the development of artificial intelligence as “leading nations” in the industry.

“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the well-being of the people,” Xi said in the White House’s Grand Foyer.

For his part, Trump said he and Xi will discuss AI, which Trump has taken to calling “ super intelligence .”

“The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come,” he said.

Earlier Thursday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that it would be a “big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.”

“That is China’s position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ,” Trump wrote, referring to the Department of Justice.

The president has repeatedly said the only guardrail needed is the department, despite many industry officials calling for new safeguards.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei both appeared before the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday and urged global cooperation on AI safeguards.

“In our history, there have been times where countries who compete and don’t always like each other very much still come together for shared interests and the collective good in the face of a powerful new technology,” Altman said. “We believe this must be one of those times.”

But Trump suggested in his speech that the U.S. “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme” on AI.

Trump has also maintained the U.S. needs to win the race on AI development. He has called any concerns of the technology hurting humanity a “hoax.”
