The death toll in Nepal from last week's devastating flooding in the Himalayas has risen to 1,127, police said on Wednesday.

Of the bodies recovered so far, only 95 had been handed over to affected families by Wednesday morning, according to Nepalese police. China's death toll for the Tibet region has stood at 16 for several days.

One week on, the full scale of the disaster remains unclear.

The catastrophic flash flood, carrying water, mud, ice and debris, swept away everything in its path in the border region. Experts believe a massive glacier collapse on the Tibetan side triggered the disaster.

The death toll in Nepal alone passed 1,000 on Tuesday, while more than 4,600 people were reported missing.

Most of the bodies recovered so far have not been identified. Authorities said rescuers were often finding only bone fragments or other human remains.

All recovered remains could, however, be identified through DNA analysis, according to authorities.

The World Health Organization has warned of the risk of disease outbreaks in the affected areas.

Large numbers of displaced people living in cramped conditions, together with flooding and stagnant water, increased the risk of infectious diseases spreading, the WHO said.
