Four arrested during gangland violence 'day of action'

Police have arrested four men during a pre-planned "day of action" as part of an ongoing investigation into gangland violence.

Police executed warrants at addresses in Bellshill and Motherwell on Friday and also recovered four stolen vehicles.

One of the men arrested, a 29-year-old, was charged after a car crashed into a house in Eaglesham on Friday 21 August. There were no reports of any injuries. He is due to appear in court on Monday.

It brings the total number of arrests as part of Operation Portaledge to 81.

A 21-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with a disturbance at a premises in Milton Road, Kirkintilloch on Tuesday 18 August and a wilful fireraising in the same area on Saturday 22 August.

He was due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday.

A second 21-year-old man was also arrested and charged in connection with the wilful fireraising on Saturday 22 August.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and charged after a vehicle struck a property in Low Borland Way, Eaglesham on Friday 21 August. There were no reports of any injuries.

He is also due to appear in court on Monday.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a wilful fire-raising of a car in Crowhill Street, Glasgow at about 04:30 on Monday 6 April. No-one was injured.

Police said extensive inquiries remained ongoing into the incidents, with CCTV footage being examined and forensic analysis carried out.

Det Ch Insp David Lamont said: "This day of action should send a clear message to those involved in this type of criminality, that we will not give up and you will be brought to justice.

"These incidents had the potential to have much more serious consequences, and I want to be absolutely clear- this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"Significant inquiries remain ongoing in relation to all of these incidents and we will continue to draw on detectives and specialist resources to identify anyone else involved."

In July, Police Scotland announced that an ongoing gang feud across central Scotland had come to an end.

The force said Operation Portaledge had brought dozens of arrests and there was a "resolution of differences" between rival groups.

However, there appeared to be another outbreak of incidents in August.
