Iran attacks US ship in Strait of Hormuz

Iran has said that it attacked an American ship in the Strait of Hormuz, according to state media.

Iranian state-run media outlet Press TV reported Sunday that a U.S. military vessel, which was remotely-operated, had been attacked by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to the military group itself.

Per an IRGC statement, the vessel had been trying to go into a restricted portion in the Strait of Hormuz, Press TV reported .

“With the grace and favor of Almighty God, every desperate move by the enemy is being closely monitored by brave, self-sacrificing IRGC Navy forces and will be met with a decisive attack,” the IRGC said in its Sunday statement, per Press TV.

On Saturday , U.S. Central Command (Centcom) conducted strikes on multiple Iranian crude oil carriers due to “multiple unprovoked” attacks from Iran on two American warships, per the military command.

U.S. forces “permanently disabled” three IRGC crude oil carriers near Kharg Island and in the Gulf of Oman. There were no U.S. service members harmed in the Iranian attacks, Centcom said.

“Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost —taking out three of yours,” Centcom Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said in a statement shared on social media. “We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet.”

Both the U.S. and Iran ramped up their military operations last week. On Tuesday, the U.S. carried out about 100 strikes against Iranian targets, and Tehran responded, targeting U.S. military bases and allies via strikes across the Middle East.
