Fall is when a wardrobe really earns its keep. Cooler temperatures let you experiment with layers, richer textures and stylish shoes without being hemmed in by the need for heavy winter coats and practical footwear — or, at the opposite extreme, breezy shorts and sweat-wicking tees . In other words, it's the season that gives you the most latitude to showcase your personal style.
But that doesn't mean you need a closet overhaul or major shopping spree to look pulled together. "You don't necessarily need [lots] more clothes, you may just need better versions of them," says Matt Jefferson , senior style consultant at Tweeds. "Replacing basic pieces [with] quality materials is one of the easiest ways to make a fall wardrobe look and feel more elevated."
I spoke with four style experts and asked them to weigh in on the versatile pieces that can take you from casual weekend errands to date nights this fall, along with tips for styling them with what you already own. Consider it a winning recipe for a fall wardrobe that looks rich without breaking the bank.
Somewhere between a shirt and a jacket, a casual chore coat is an ideal transitional piece for fall. "Every guy should have a simple chore coat or utility jacket for fall," says Jefferson, calling the workwear staple timeless. "It's an easy alternative to a hoodie and gives you another layer that can work with everything from jeans to trousers."
Celebrity stylist Derek Warburton agrees. With its boxy fit, sturdy construction and plentiful pockets, a chore coat is as practical as it is versatile. "A lightweight overshirt or chore-style shirt offers a relaxed silhouette while being an easy-to-style layer," he says.
How to style it: "Think in layers," says Jefferson. "Fall is the perfect time to add depth and interest to an outfit instead of relying on a basic top and bottom." Try wearing your chore coat over a sturdy tee or knit Henley. Warburton favors breathable natural fibers such as cotton, cashmere, and linen, "especially in fall, when temperatures can still turn warm despite the cold season." His go-to colors include olive, khaki, brown and other autumnal shades.

"A loafer is a timeless wardrobe essential every man should own," says Tara West, a Boston-based fashion stylist. "Classic and effortlessly polished, it is a shoe you can rely on season after season." Jefferson adds that loafers are a low-effort way to elevate your outfit without looking too "overdone."
How to style them : Jefferson suggests swapping in loafers whenever you'd otherwise reach for your go-to running sneakers outside of the gym. "Go one step dressier than your default," he explains. "Those small substitutions can completely change how put together you look without making you feel overdressed." West recommends wearing loafers "with tailored trousers for a more refined look" or pairing them with denim for an elevated everyday outfit.

" Dark denim is back this fall season ," says Warburton, who calls dark-wash jeans "perfect for a transitional look … casual enough, while also fitting right into office and professional settings." Natasha Cooper, a retail trend expert at MediaVision , has a denim philosophy to live by: The colder the weather, the darker the jeans. "Fall is the perfect time to wear your dark jeans," she says, "and many shoppers agree. Dark indigo jeans for men are [trending] on Google."
How to style them: For a fresh take on this timeless wash, Warburton recommends "high rise jeans with relaxed straight-legs." The silhouette pairs easily with fall staples, including button-down shirts, jackets, blazers and trench coats. Cooper adds that dark jeans "can work perfectly with a knitted polo or a cashmere jumper."

"Like a jacket, a pair of boots for fall is a non-negotiable and perfect for cooler evenings and those early mornings that might have a touch of frost," says Cooper. "A classic pair of Chelsea boots or chukkas is a great alternative to wearing sneakers with everything," adds Jefferson. Chelsea boots, with their distinct elastic side panels, and chukkas, a low-profile, dressier boot with just a few laces, are "timeless if you stick with a classic shape and avoid overly trendy designs," says Jefferson.
How to style them: Styles like "Timberlands or Wallabees are a popular choice when it comes to men's boots, as they strike a balance of style and comfort," says Cooper. "They can work with jeans, chinos, trousers and even a sport coat, which makes them one of the more versatile footwear investments for fall," adds Jefferson.

You probably already have a bunch of sweaters in your closet, but if you need a refresh, "invest in a couple of sweaters in classic colors and better materials," says Jefferson. " Cashmere and merino wool instantly make a basic sweater feel more elevated without making the outfit complicated. A simple crewneck in navy, gray or another versatile neutral is timeless and something you'll continue reaching for year after year." Warburton also likes chunkier sweaters. "Braided and cable knit textures are particularly popular right now, as well as dyed, single color patterns," he says.
How to style it: "Treat cardigans as a sort of lightweight jacket over a fitted shirt or oversized shirt, while sweaters, especially oversized ones, can be good alone as statement pieces," says Warburton. West adds, "a three-quarter-zip sweater is a modern men's essential. It's polished without feeling too dressed up. Layer it over a button-down for work or pair it with jeans for a weekend look."
