Trichy corpn deploys special teams to tackle waterlogging

Trichy: Trichy Corporation has formed special teams for each of its five zones to address inundation complaints in residential areas during the northeast monsoon. Equipped with high-power diesel motor pumps, the teams are moving across the city to drain stagnant water and restore connectivity on affected roads.Corporation commissioner N Ponmani and mayor Mu Anbalagan inspected flood-prone areas in KK Nagar and Crawford on Sunday and directed ward-level officials to make use of the special teams.Officials said several parts of the city received 2-4cm of rainfall by Sunday morning, most of it on Saturday night. Though water stagnated in several areas overnight, it receded from most places by morning.Major drains carrying surplus rainwater from the airport, KK Nagar, Khajamalai, Crawford and Karumandapam were cleared again using workers and machinery to ensure the smooth flow of runoff to Kollankulam tank and then to the Koraiyar River.Anbalagan also inspected Anbu Nagar in E Pudur and Crawford to assess the functioning of drains leading to Kollankulam tank. “Additional diesel motor pumps have been deployed in low-lying areas such as Karumandapam, Crawford and KK Nagar. A team of workers has been assigned to divert rainwater to nearby drains and water bodies. As more properties have come up on vacant land, we had to intervene immediately to find alternatives for diverting stagnant water. Previously, some of the rainwater would be accommodated on vacant land,” a corporation official said.Ponmani inspected residential areas in KK Nagar and supervised efforts to drain waterlogged roads.
