Bengaluru-based goldsmith flees with gold meant for bangles, held in Bengal

Bengaluru: A goldsmith’s escape to West Bengal with gold meant for making bangles backfired as Subramanyanagar police tracked him down and arrested him, recovering 679 grams of jewellery and ingots worth around Rs 1 crore.The owner of a gold jewellery manufacturing firm in Rajajinagar had employed the 31-year-old accused, Islam Mallick, a resident of Manjunathanagar and native of West Bengal, for nearly five years to make jewellery, including bangles.On Aug 20, the owner handed over gold weighing over 700 grams to Mallick for the job. However, the accused disappeared with the gold the next day.A police team traced and detained him in Kalna town of Bardhaman on Sept 15, and recovered 441 grams of gold jewellery from his wife’s maternal home.Mallick was brought to Bengaluru on a transit warrant and taken into custody. During questioning, Mallick said there was more gold at his house in Manjunathanagar. Police subsequently recovered a 238-gram gold ingot.3 held for stealing Rs 3L gold jewellery from houseBengaluru: Three young burglars allegedly involved in a housebreaking case in Subramanyanagar, northwest Bengaluru, were arrested and 23 grams of stolen gold jewellery worth around Rs 3 lakh recovered.The accused are Srinidhi M, 22, Bhuvanesh R, 20, and Chetan, 24, from Basaveshwaranagar and Banashankari.The complainant had locked his house on 13th Main in Subramanyanagar and gone to a friend’s place.
