AMRITSAR: A Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel was injured after three unidentified bike-borne assailants allegedly opened fire at him near Ajnala in Punjab’s Amritsar district on Sunday evening, police said.The injured personnel, identified as Sukhchain Singh, a resident of Jagdev Khurd village, is posted at Amritsar Railway Station. The incident occurred near a canal, around one kilometre from his home, while he was returning from duty on his motorcycle in plain clothes.According to police, one of the bullets hit Singh’s left shoulder and passed through. He was rushed to Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment and is stated to be out of danger.Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharminder Kalyan said an FIR has been registered and the police are investigating the incident from all angles.Singh said three men riding a motorcycle approached him from behind, fired at him and fled. As his home was nearby, he managed to reach there before being taken for medical treatment.The GRP personnel also suspected that the shooting could be linked to an old family dispute, claiming that his brother had earlier been murdered. He said the attackers may have known his identity despite him being in plain clothes.Police teams are scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the assailants and establish the motive behind the attack.
