3 more road projects on Shah’s city itinerary

New Delhi: Along with inaugurating the long-awaited Barapullah Phase-III elevated corridor, Union home minister Amit Shah will lay the foundation stone of two infrastructure projects while throwing open another road facility in the city Tuesday.Public Works Department minister Parvesh Verma said that while the foundation stones for the extension of the Modi Mill flyover up to Kalkaji and a new parallel flyover at the Savitri Cinema junction will be laid, the Mukarba Chowk underpass will be inaugurated.The Modi Mill flyover extension and the Savitri Cinema junction flyover have been sanctioned at a combined cost of Rs 371 crore, with Rs 150 crore earmarked for the current financial year. Delhi govt has set a target to complete both projects in 24 to 30 months.The 1.5km structure extending the Modi Mill flyover to Kalkaji will have six lanes, with nine-metre-wide carriageways on either side, along with medians, crash barriers and railings, said an official. The project will cover key intersections, including Captain Gaur Marg, Maa Anand Mai Marg, Lotus Temple Road, Masjid Moth Road and Nehru Place bus depot.At the Savitri Cinema junction, a 900-metre-long, one-way, three-lane grade separator will be constructed to ease traffic bottlenecks affecting Greater Kailash-I and II, and CR Park. The structure will have 435 metres of elevated road, two entry and exit ramps, dedicated bus bays and redesigned junctions. The project will feature revamped footpaths, cycle tracks, better drainage to prevent waterlogging, and enhanced streetlighting.The Mukarba Chowk project, which has been completed, comprises three underpasses near gate no. 3 of Haiderpur Badli Mor metro station. Two underpasses are for vehicular movement, while the other facility is for pedestrians and non-motorised transport, said a govt official.The two vehicular underpasses are around 50 metres long, 9.6 metres wide and six metres high. They will provide connectivity between Badli and Rohini on one side and Azadpur and Jahangirpuri on the other, reducing the need for commuters to use the congested Mukarba Chowk intersection or the flyover.PWD estimates that around 15,800 vehicles will use the two underpasses. The facilities are expected to reduce travel time by up to 10 minutes per trip and cut the travel distance by nearly one kilometre. The project is also expected to save around 58,000 litres of fuel annually.
