Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) on Saturday called out her fellow Democrats over their association with controversial left-wing streamer Hasan Piker.
“As Democrats, we constantly criticize the far-right for their incendiary and discriminatory politics, but we need to hold ourselves to the same standard,” Craig said in a post on the social platform X . “Hasan Piker’s rhetoric is polarizing and dangerous, and embracing him as a party is a mistake.”
“I am disappointed that Minnesota DFLers are hosting an event with him here,” she added, referencing the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Minnesota’s equivalent of a Democratic state party.
Piker responded to Craig in his own X post, saying that “another democrat joins the chorus of right wing neo-nazis to attack their left flank.”
“great. this constant desperation to appease the right is precisely why we’re in this mess to begin with,” added Piker, a consistent critic of the Democratic Party.
Piker has become a lightning rod in American politics in the last year. The Twitch streamer also has a history of association with left-leaning figures in American politics, including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.).
Piker has also earned the ire of more moderate Democrats, including Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (Fla.).
The streamer’s controversial comments include him saying in 2019 that “America deserved 9/11” due to its military campaigns worldwide. However, he recently said he could have better phrased his comments about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
