Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who has bucked his party in recent years, said Tuesday's midterm blowout by Democrats was "about holding Republicans accountable for betraying their promises."

"Tonight's outcome isn't about placing faith in Democrats or socialist principles; it's about holding Republicans accountable for betraying their promises," Massie said Tuesday night on the social platform X .

"All Republicans had to do was: 1. put Americans First 2. not start another war 3. prosecute sex traffickers," he added.

A blue wave swept across the U.S. on Tuesday, with the Democrats winning both the House and Senate majorities and securing a chance of restricting President Trump's power until the end of his second term.

The Democrats' victories came amid rocky political territory for the GOP, with Republicans weighed down by issues including the unpopular war in Iran, President Trump's slumping approval numbers and concerns about the cost of living.

Democrats are projected to end up with 257 seats in the House and 55 seats in the Senate , according to Decision Desk HQ, marking gains for the party that currently holds 214 seats in the lower chamber and 45 seats in the upper.

In September, Massie, who lost his primary to an opponent supported by Trump, predicted a backlash toward the president and his party in this year's midterm elections.

"I think his comeuppance will happen on Election Day, and the day after I think there's going to be a reckoning," Massie, who has been a vocal critic of Trump and his policies, told CNN's Kaitlan Collins at the time.

Massie has crossed the aisle to back multiple Iran war powers resolutions and spearheaded a bipartisan effort for the release of files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
