Rubio: New US site lets Americans apply online for passport

President Trump’s new artificial intelligence website allows for Americans to apply for passports online, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday.

During a presentation announcing America.gov on Tuesday, Rubio derided the previous process of applying for and receiving a passport.

“I think you would agree that American citizens deserve better than this, and that’s why the State Department is partnering with America.gov to rebuild the entire thing from the ground up, and it begins with something pretty remarkable,” the State Department head said during his presentation .

“Starting next year, Americans will be able to apply for their first passport entirely online,” he added.

Rubio showed a demonstration and gave an explanation of how the process works. A user can type “How do I apply for my first passport?” into the search bar of the America.gov website. From there, people can take their own passport photo, see an example of how it will look on the document and pay for it.

On Tuesday, Trump launched the America.gov website that uses AI to assist Americans in navigating the federal government and locating information and services.

While at an event at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, Trump boasted about the website. The president thanked Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, who now heads the National Design Studio and serves as the inaugural U.S. chief design officer, for being the “mastermind behind many of the incredible breakthroughs.”

“It’s the ultimate product. It’s called America when you think about it,” Trump said. “With America.gov, the federal government no longer stands in your way, and it stands only at your service. And that’s what we’re doing. We’re simplifying it. We’re glamorizing it. We’re making it what it should be.”
