Kimberly Guilfoyle, nominee to be an Ambassador to Greece, arrives for her Senate Foreign Relations Committee nomination hearing on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee called for further accountability after the White House announced Tuesday that the Trump administration has asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign following reports about her alleged misconduct.

“Resigning does not shield her from accountability,” the committee’s Democrats wrote on the social platform X . “Guilfoyle used her position as a Trump official to get rich, while American families struggle with the cost of living.”

The statement continued: “Congress must conduct oversight to understand how this happened and hold the admin accountable.”

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, also committed to continuing to investigate Guilfoyle.

“While your time as Ambassador to Greece may be coming to an end, our investigation has not,” he wrote on X . “We have asked you a series of questions, and we look forward to your responses.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported last week that MAGA donor Eric Deters accused Guilfoyle of asking him to wire her $100,000 to pay off her American Express bill ahead of her 2025 confirmation hearing and instructed him to do so without leaving a paper trail.

The Journal later released a separate report over the weekend with new allegations that Guilfoyle bragged about her connections to wealthy Greek businessmen who bankrolled her luxury travel.

Guilfoyle denied the allegations in a statement addressing her resignation, saying she would “vigorously” defend herself.

“I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional. I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service,” she wrote.

The accusations triggered a slew of investigations into her conduct, including probes from the State Department and in Congress.

Following the news of her ouster, Trump on Tuesday downplayed her closeness to his family. Guilfoyle was engaged to the president’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. until the two split in 2024. They were first linked together in 2018.

“She wasn’t a member of my family. I guess she dated my son a long time ago,” Trump said.

He added that he “didn’t like” what he read in the recent swirl of negative stories detailing embarrassing and possibly illegal conduct ahead of her confirmation and while serving in her diplomatic position.
