Raskin attacks Trump’s proposed arch, calls for DC statehood

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Sunday went after President Trump for his triumphal arch and pressed for statehood for Washington, D.C.

The president in a Truth Social post on Sunday said that the plans for the massive arch bridging D.C. and Virginia will incorporate a “top grade military complex” and house snipers and drones.

“Does Trump understand no one wants his stupid arch? Dressing it up as a military necessity doesn’t help. America is sick of the military being used as an excuse for Trump’s architectural whims and narcissistic fancies,” Raskin said in a Sunday evening post on the social platform X.

“Congress will never support this idiocy, but if you want to know what’s actually unique about Washington, it’s that it’s the only national capital on planet Earth not represented in its own legislature,” the Maryland lawmaker added. “Why don’t we talk about D.C. statehood instead of this arch-imbecility?”

When reached for comment by The Hill, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in an emailed statement that “lightweight Jamie Raskin [is] a stupid person’s idea of a smart person.”

“The Triumphal Arch in Memorial Circle is going to be one of the most iconic landmarks not only in Washington, D.C., but throughout the world,” Ingle added.
