Live updates: President Trump meets with prime ministers of U.K., Japan

President Trump is meeting with Britain’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham — a member of the country’s left-leaning Labour Party, as well as the prime minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi.

The meeting marks the first time Trump has met with Burnham, who was elected to the post in mid July. Though the British head of state previously criticized the American president following the Jan. 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol, he told reporters on his way to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City he hopes they can find “common ground.”

The meeting follows the president’s signing of a security deal with Greenland and Denmark, allowing the U.S. military to have a presence on the arctic island, as well as his Tuesday address to the assembly — where he called for artificial intelligence to be dubbed “super intelligence.”

“From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to ‘artificial,’” he said in his remarks, later adding, “Welcome to the new world of superintelligence.”

The speech comes as multiple conflicts , rising global energy prices and concerns around rapidly evolving artificial intelligence hang over the annual gathering. The Trump administration is also navigating scrutiny from the media and First Amendment advocates after the president barred three networks from the White House.

Both the Iran conflict and Russia’s war with Ukraine featured prominently as the president holds a packed slate of meetings with world leaders — including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the heads of several Gulf countries — on the sidelines of the forum.

His Tuesday schedule also includes a policy meeting, a Shield of the Americas event and a closed-door meeting with Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez.
