Elon Musk’s super PAC dives into the midterms to bolster Republicans in battleground races

Elon Musk’s super PAC has funneled about $800,000 into battleground races across the country to boost Republican candidates. Musk’s America PAC is weighing in on highly competitive races, including the Senate contests in Maine, Michigan and Texas, according to a report it filed with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday night. America PAC disclosed nearly a quarter-million dollars in recent spending on the Texas Senate race, more than $170,000 on the Maine Senate race and more than $25,000 on the Michigan Senate race. NBC News last week reported that the super PAC had started to spend on digital ads in Maine, Michigan and New Hampshire to support conservatives and compel people to register to vote. The new filing indicates that the billionaire is prepared to unleash more money as Democrats and Republicans barrel toward midterm elections, which are just about two months away. Democrats are seeking to flip several competitive seats in hopes of retaking one or both chambers of Congress. And the spending in Texas’ Senate race, although small when compared to the tens of millions expected to rain down in the contest between Paxton and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, comes as Republicans have raised concerns about the their nominee’s fundraising gap and called on outside groups to help fill it. Musk’s super PAC is spending money across the country in House and Senate races in more than a dozen states: Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for America PAC, said in a statement over the summer that it was “excited to again be part of the team” to support Republicans’ midterm efforts. “The president’s political team and the rest of the GOP apparatus have built a top-notch operation that will put Republicans in a strong position to buck history and retain control of Congress this fall, and we’re excited to again be part of the team,” he said in the prior statement. Musk was a major financial player in the 2024 presidential race, when he spent more than $250 million to support President Donald Trump and Republicans. The next year, he spent millions of dollars to boost a conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate, who lost the race. Trump and Musk had a close relationship in the first months of the president’s second term, when Musk headed the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. Musk made appearances at cabinet meetings, and he appeared to have the president’s ear. The two had a brief, but contentious, falling out. Musk briefly threatened to create a third political party — the “America Party” — amid his frustration with Trump, but has not followed through. The two men have since appeared to be on good terms. Earlier this year, Musk traveled with Trump to China for the president’s state visit.
