Tucker Carlson: El-Sayed campaign ‘literally Trumpian’

Right-wing media personality Tucker Carlson described Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign as “literally Trumpian” in his podcast episode released Wednesday.

During an interview with conservative commentator Saagar Enjeti’s, the pair discussed the Michigan senate race between El-Sayed and his GOP opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.).

“I watch his campaign now, America First,” Enjeti said of El-Sayed. “When he talks about Israel, he says, ‘Israel is committing a genocide, but ultimately, I want to make sure that you don’t pay more for health care. I don’t want your tax dollars going abroad to fund this barbaric military.’”

“He stands in front of a giant American flag. It’s almost Trumpian in terms of a lot —,” Enjeti added, before Carlson cut in.

“Well, it’s literally Trumpian,” Carlson said.

El-Sayed, one of the many progressive insurgents that notched notable wins against more establishment figures in Democratic primaries this cycle, has pushed policies like the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Medicare for All and reduction of U.S. financial support for Israel.

Calls for the reduction in U.S. financial support to the Israeli government have grown in the last few years, especially in the wake of Israel’s war in Gaza — which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, destroyed infrastructure on a mass scale and resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis in the territory.

El-Sayed is also a critic of the U.S.’s war in Iran, which it has waged alongside Israel since February.

Trump has previously denounced long American wars in the Middle East. In February 2016, during a debate alongside Republican opponents, he went after former President George W. Bush for engaging in a war with Iraq — then calling the move “a big, fat mistake.”

In June, President Trump shot down the idea that he campaigned on not getting into “endless” wars.

“I didn’t promise anything. I don’t like these endless wars. This is not an endless war,” he told host Kristen Welker on NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” referring to the ongoing Iran war.

Carlson, a former Fox News pundit, previously supported President Trump — a stance for which he has expressed regret . The conservative media personality turned on the president after the Iran war began and even called for his removal Saturday due to speculation that Trump had considered using nuclear weapons in the conflict — which the White House has denied .
