Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) accused Mike Davis, a close legal ally of the president, of “mobilizing death threats” against her and her staff.
Slotkin wrote on social media Monday that Davis had originally been in the mix to be President Trump’s next attorney general after former Attorney General Pam Bondi left her post but “is now at a MAGA dark money group, mobilizing death threats against me and my staff for sport.”
“And if you use the justice system for frivolous lawsuits used to intimidate and jail your political opponents, you should be held accountable for that via your bar status. No abuse of power and not violating the law? Then we have no problem,” she continued.
“The threats and intimidation — of me, my staff, and my family — *are the point* of this kind of play. This dude and so many others are just hoping that we’ll shut up in response,” Slotkin wrote.
The senator has received criticism recently from Trump and other figures on the right over remarks she made during an event last week at the University of Chicago, where she said she wanted young people who are considering working for the Trump administration to think, “Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want and so let me avoid participating in that.”
“I want that deterrence message,” she said.
Davis responded to Slotkin’s remarks over the weekend, writing on social media that the Democrat “will learn why we have the Second Amendment” if she employed “illegal arrests and political persecutions to intimidate young Americans with opposing political views.”
“Learn about the Second Amendment, sweetheart,” he wrote in another post Sunday.
Trump additionally called Slotkin “a lowlife” who is “destroying her state” to reporters Monday, accusing Democrats of “really discouraging people from going into politics.”
Davis previously served as chief counsel for nominations to Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) during Trump’s first term, where he cleared the way for the president’s nominees.
Since then, Davis grew closer to Trump during the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago when he defended the president in the press. He also backed the Trump administration’s probe into former Obama-era officials last year, saying on Fox News: “It doesn’t get more serious than this. This is a criminal conspiracy.”
“The evidence is clear there’s a criminal conspiracy here and nobody is above the law,” Davis told Fox News at the time.
He now spearheads Article III Project, a group which says it “brings brass knuckles to fight leftist lawfare,” according to its website .
