Pop star Olivia Rodrigo delivered flowers to Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton (D) during her tour stop in Columbus on Friday night, a show of support in the close contest.

While performing her song “stupid song,” Rodrigo walked through the crowd at the Schottenstein Center on The Ohio State University’s campus, handed flowers to Acton and embraced her.

During her first show in Columbus, Rodrigo wore an “Amy Acton for Governor” shirt, showing her support for the Democratic nominee who is locked in a competitive race against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Ohio loves you,” Acton wrote on the social platform X, with an image of Rodrigo wearing the campaign shirt.

Ramaswamy drew controversy for running an ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother, who calls her daughter a “liar” and says she is unfit for office.

Acton’s stepfather was charged with sexually abusing Acton at a young age, and Acton was removed from her mother’s custody at age 12. Acton’s mother stayed with their stepfather until his death, the campaign said.

The ad prompted blowback from both parties, including Ohio’s current Republican governor, Mike DeWine, who said the ad should be taken down. Ramaswamy’s campaign put millions behind airing the ad statewide, but it recently came down after running its cycle on the air.

Nonpartisan election forecaster Decision Desk HQ, a partner of The Hill, gives Acton a 61 percent chance of beating Ramaswamy.

Rodrigo has supported political causes in the past, namely reproductive rights. After a leaked draft opinion of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson, Rodrigo called out the decision at one of her concerts.

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk about how heartbroken I am over the Supreme Court’s potential decision to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Rodrigo said at the concert.

The singer recently raised $20 million for women’s health at an August benefit concert.

And when the Trump administration posted social media videos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids using Rodrigo’s music, she condemned the move and later told NPR that she thinks the administration is baiting pop stars into a response.
