A ballot drop off box is seen at the Town Hall in Brunswick, Maine, on Oct. 28, 2026.

Thousands of voters in Washoe County, Nev., received mail-in ballot return envelopes with the word “FALSE” written on them.

A spokesperson for the county’s Registrar of Voters, George Guthrie, said in a statement to The Hill that the affected envelopes were “not limited to voters of any particular political party.”

“The inclusion of the word ‘FALSE’ on mail ballot return envelopes resulted from a printing error that affected approximately 32,000 envelopes in the initial production batch prepared by our ballot printing vendor,” Guthrie continued.

Envelopes intended to indicate which voters required additional identification under state law were meant to display “TRUE” in a hidden “ID Required” field, according to Guthrie, though “for voters not requiring additional identification, no designation was intended to appear, but the printing error caused ‘FALSE’ to be printed on their envelopes.”

“The error was promptly identified and corrected in subsequent batches and did not affect voter registration records, identification requirements, the validity of the ballots or voters’ ability to cast their ballots,” he concluded.

Nevada is one state where Democrats are looking to expand, particularly in the state’s gubernatorial race. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo (R) is running to defend his seat from opponent state Attorney General Aaron Ford (D).

The race is designated as a toss-up by Cook Political Report , which noted in its analysis that “things looked better earlier this year” for Lombardo “before the reality of the national environment fully set in.”

President Trump won the state by about 3 points in 2024, but Lombardo has struggled to build a similar lead against his opponent in polls leading up to Election Day.

Ford’s campaign has picked up steam following a rally with former Vice President Kamala Harris in late October and an appearance at a candidate debate that Lombardo declined to participate in.

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar (D) told The Hill that “vendors working in the election space need to hold themselves to the highest standard and be aware that their actions can have a significant impact on voter confidence.”

“Nevadans deserve better and the Secretary of State’s Office is evaluating our options for future elections,” Aguilar continued.
