Trump, Mamdani to meet in New York on Monday

President Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) are set to meet Monday at the mayor’s house, Gracie Mansion, in the Big Apple, a White House official and the mayor’s press office said Sunday.

In an emailed statement, Mamdani’s press office said that “the meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”

Mamdani and Trump, while on opposite sides of the political spectrum, have had a notably cordial relationship.

Earlier this year , Mamdani touted a “productive” meeting with the president at the White House, in which the mayor said they talked about the possibility of building additional housing in the two politicians’ hometown.

Trump also praised the then-mayor-elect following another meeting last November at the White House. The president had previously attacked the democratic socialist, who ran an insurgent campaign against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and called Mamdani a “communist.”

“I think you’re going to have, hopefully, a really great mayor. The better he does, the happier I am,” Trump said at the time in the Oval Office, with Mamdani right next to him.

“There’s no difference in party, there’s no difference in anything. And we’re going to be helping him to make everybody’s dream come true. Having a strong and very safe New York.”

In the wake of Mamdani’s win last year, democratic socialists and left-leaning candidates have notched wins in Democratic primaries across the country. The New York City mayor has also rapidly become one of the most prominent Democrats in the country and a target for the right.
