Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) declared early Wednesday morning that Republicans “will not stand idly by” as Democrats try to reverse the actions of President Trump’s first two years in office by raising taxes or restoring spending cuts to popular programs.
And Thune expressed his gratitude that Trump will still be in office over the next two years to veto any legislation passed by a Democratic-controlled Senate and House.
“As we head into 2027, Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we’ve done. Thankfully, we still have President Trump in the White House, and we’ll work with him to stop the worst impulses of Democrat extremism,” the senator posted to the social platform X .
“We cannot let their fringe positions become the mainstream,” he added.
Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), will make renewing the expanded Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies, which expired at the beginning of the year, a top priority in 2027.
They will also seek to unwind the big corporate tax cuts and cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program enacted in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act .
Schumer told reporters on election night that Democrats will also prioritize addressing the affordability crisis in America and investigating “corruption” in the Trump administration.
He noted the new Democratic majorities’ “number one focus has to be producing for the American people in terms of their number one need: the high costs that Trump has imposed on them.”
The second priority would be to “go after the corruption,” the New York Democrat added.
“This is the most corrupt administration in American history,” he said.
Thune also defended Trump’s and Senate Republicans’ records since the 2024 election.
“Over the last two years, Senate Republicans have put up a strong record of accomplishment that’s created safer streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for families and businesses to get ahead,” he continued in the post.
“After fighting Democrat obstruction at every turn, we prevented the largest tax hike in American history, secured our border in an unprecedented way, confirmed the president’s Cabinet at the fastest pace in two decades, and put strong conservative judges on benches across the country faster than we have since the Reagan administration,” the GOP leader argued.
