Democratic Strategist James Carville said Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) sold her soul in endorsing former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) for Senate in Michigan over her primary rival, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.

The strategist took to YouTube to disavow Stevens for coming out against El-Sayed in a battleground race that could decide control of the Senate. Carville said Stevens’s political career is over and panned her for siding with Republicans, who he said are committing “treason of the highest level.”

“You got to put some kind of a price on yourself, or some kind of goddamn self-pride. But your political career is over,” Carville said.

Stevens came out in support of Rogers — a staunch supporter of President Trump, whom she has strongly spoken out against in the past — after El-Sayed disinvited her from a campaign stop over the weekend. Stevens said in an appearance on CNN on Sunday night that the Democratic nominee was injecting “anger” into the race, and she has taken issue with El-Sayed’s stance on Israel.

Carville likened Stevens’s move to Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who has often crossed his party and voted with Republicans, particularly on issues related to Israel.

“I think El-Sayed offered her one cheeseburger and Rogers offered her two cheeseburgers, and in the spirit of John Fetterman, s—, gimme another cheeseburger and I’ll give you my soul,” Carville said. “I mean, lady, if you’re going to sell your soul, you got to get more for it than a f—ing cheeseburger, OK.”

Stevens said Sunday that she was putting country over party in her endorsement of Rogers and that she still wants to see Democrats take the Senate majority. She has been widely panned across the Democratic landscape for the perceived betrayal, while Trump applauded the legislator and said he would welcome her to the GOP.

Carville said Republicans will treat Stevens poorly if she joins the GOP, while Democrats won’t associate with her at all.

“If you think that these Republicans are going to treat you as anything other than what they view you as, and that is, let me just break the news to you — a used condom,” Carville said. “The Democrats don’t even think you’re worth a used condom, but that’s about where you are. You made your bed, sleep in it. You s— in your mess kit, eat it.”

The Hill has reached out to Stevens’s congressional office for comment.
