Carville claims Trump ‘wants to torture’ GOP ahead of midterms

Democratic strategist James Carville speculated Tuesday that President Trump wants his party to lose the midterms.

“The only answer that I can come up [with] that explains the current behavior of Donald Trump is simply this: He wants the Republicans to lose. He hates them. He wants to torture them,” Carville told journalist Al Hunt on their “ Politics War Room ” podcast.

“He thinks that he saved them, he taught them how to win, [they] turned [their] back on him and he’s going to teach them a lesson,” the veteran strategist added.

Republicans are trying to keep control of their slim margins in the Senate and House this November, while Democrats are seeking control of Congress for the final two years of Trump’s term.

If the GOP maintains its majorities in both chambers, it will mark the first time the incumbent president’s party has done so since Republicans kept the Senate and House in 2002, during former President George W. Bush’s first term.

Trump has been on the campaign trail in recent weeks, laying out his message to an electorate increasingly dissatisfied with his job performance amid persistent inflation and the Iran war .

“What I want you to do is pretend, please, that I’m on the ballot,” the president told attendees of a rally he held alongside Sen. Darline Graham (R-S.C.) last month.

Trump will also speak on both nights of the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas, which starts on Wednesday .

As of Tuesday, Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 68 percent chance to retake the House and puts Senate control at 50-50 odds.

Democrats need to flip three seats to take back the lower chamber and four seats to take back the upper chamber. With Vice President Vance as the tiebreaker, Republicans would maintain their majority in Senate in the event of an even split.

During Tuesday’s episode of “Politics War Room,” Carville brought up Trump’s recent dismissal of Americans’ concerns regarding AI as an example of why he wants the GOP to lose the midterms.

“It sounds insane, that you have a president who wants his political party to lose big,” the vocal Trump critic remarked. “But I … can’t think of another explanation … that really answers as many questions as this one does.”
