Recalls, warning issued for popular squishy kids’ toys over ‘serious injury’ risk

(NEXSTAR) – Popular children’s squeeze toys have been recalled over concerns of serious injury hazards related to the beads within them, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced. The agency is also warning consumers to immediately stop using another similar toy, despite no recall being issued.

Recalls have been issued for Squeezy Dumplings from GIHNJSI and Rainbow Mystery Squishy Buns from OKK Trading.

Both products, pictured below, contain water beads, which, if ingested, could expand within a child’s body, the CPSC explains. This can lead to choking and intestinal obstruction, “resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, and a risk of death to a child.”

The Squeezy Dumplings were sold on Amazon in May and June of this year, according to the recall notice. The round, squishy balls have cartoon faces and glitter-like particles. The package looks like a bamboo steamer, with a label reading “SQUEEZY DUMPLINGS” and “SQUEEZE ME.” About 8,000 Squeezy Dumplings have been recalled.

Roughly 7,200 Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun Toys, which were available at third-party stores throughout the U.S. from May through August of this year, have been recalled. Like the Squeezy Dumplings, these toys have glitter and cartoon faces, and packaging that looks like a bamboo steamer. The labeling says “Rainbow MYSTERY” and “SUGAR EDITION.”

If you have any of the above toys, the CPSC advises writing “RECALLED” in permanent marker on the product and its container, throwing it away, and sending a photo of the disposed toy to GIHNJSI_recall@163.com , if it’s a Squeezy Dumpling, or recall@okktoys.com , if it’s a Squishy Bun. You can expect a full refund, according to the notice.

There have been no injuries reported in connection with these toys.

Meanwhile, the CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using Squishy Bun Toys from Ivyapingdianpu, as they violate mandatory safety standards for toys.

These also contain water beads, but the CPSC said the company has not agreed to a recall or offered a remedy to consumers despite receiving a Notice of Violation.

These dumpling-shaped toys contain glitter-like particles and water beads, and have a cartoon face. They come in a steamer-like container with labeling that reads “SQUISHY BUN” and “Rainbow MYSTERY.” You can see an example of these toys below:

The CPSC said roughly 100 of these toys, which were sold via Amazon in June and potentially by other sellers, are impacted.

The agency asks that if your child experiences any injuries related to these Squishy Buns, or if you notice any defects, you report it to the CPSC. These toys should also be disposed of immediately, officials said.
