Schumer calls for classified briefing on danger posed by AI

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) on Monday called on the Trump administration to provide a classified briefing to all senators on the dangers posed by AI after a researcher for Anthropic warned that companies chasing artificial superintelligence are “gambling with our lives.”

“The American people deserve better from their government at such a consequential moment. I have long argued that we must keep the U.S. as the global leader in AI innovation and security,” Schumer said in a statement.

He added, “But that innovation must be coupled with serious guardrails that earn the trust of the American public.”

“Warning bells are ringing louder than they ever have — and the Trump administration is looking the other way,” the senator continued. “Well, if they won’t hold themselves accountable, we will. And if Trump does not act, Congress must.”

Schumer said officials in President Trump’s administration need to answer questions about three areas of concern related to AI.

First, he wants the administration to provide senators with a full accounting of its new framework for testing the most powerful frontier AI model. Next, the New York Democrat pressed the administration to detail what it’s doing to prevent AI chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment from flowing to China.

Finally, he asked the White House to explain its plans to defend the U.S. from increasingly sophisticated AI-enabled cyberattacks.

The request comes as others on Capitol Hill have called for briefings or more guardrails on the emerging technology. Trump and GOP leaders, however, have pushed back on the growing AI fears .
