House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who will likely be the Speaker of the House come January, said Sunday that he is a “hard yes” when it comes to impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“I’m a hard yes on the Hegseth resolution. The so-called secretary of Defense has abused his power, undermined our national security and engineered this reckless and costly war of choice in Iran,” Jeffries said to ABC News’s Jonathan Karl on “This Week.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) had told Karl that he intends to introduce a resolution of impeachment against the defense secretary.

On Thursday, Hegseth shot back against threats of impeachment in a video posted to the social platform X. He said in the video that “a disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly,” referencing Massie.

“Just like they tried against President Trump twice. You see, their policies don’t work, so their obsession with political theater disguised as power drives them to try to destroy their opponents. It’s all about the politics of personal destruction. Didn’t work against President Trump, and it won’t work with me. You can rest assured of that,” Hegseth added in the video.

Jeffries’s comments also come after Democrats won both the House and the Senate in this year’s midterm elections earlier this week, most likely stymieing the Trump administration’s agenda for the next two years.

The House minority leader’s comments also followed him posting Thursday on the social platform X, “Why is Pete Hegseth still around?”

The Hill has reached out to the Pentagon for comment.
