Nearly 8 in 10 Americans blame the Trump administration for rising costs of living across the country, according to a poll released Friday.
The Reuters survey found 78 percent of respondents in the U.S. — including 64 percent of Republicans, 76 percent of independents and 95 percent of Democrats — believe some of the responsibility for hiked prices lies with the White House.
President Trump’s economic approval rating has taken historic hits amid the ongoing Iran war, which has sent global energy rates skyrocketing, and his administration’s decision to hike tariffs on trading partners like Canada.
These plummeting approval ratings could pose problems for Republicans on the ballot this November as the GOP fights to retain control of Congress.
Several candidates in tight races have broken with the president on issues like tariffs, with Michigan Senate GOP nominee Mike Rogers calling on the administration this week to end its economic fight with Canada “now.”
In the Reuters poll, 62 percent said they disapproved of how the president has handled the economy, including about 25 percent of Republicans and 92 percent of Democrats.
Fifty-seven percent of GOP respondents said their living costs have been increasing faster than their paychecks have under the second Trump administration. Two-thirds of the poll’s general survey population said the same.
The average price of standard gas and diesel has skyrocketed in the U.S. amid the Trump administration’s ongoing military operations against Iran, which has effectively stalled the flow of oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz.
Regular gas was up to an average of $4.37 per gallon on Friday — more than a 40 percent increase from a year ago, according to AAA . Diesel was up to around an average of $6.28 per gallon on Friday.
The six-day Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online and nationwide and completed on Monday, gathered responses from 4,506 U.S. adults. It had a margin of error of 2 percentage points for all respondents and 3 points for Republicans, Democrats and independents.
